The Next AI Advantage Is Better Humans: How Leaders Can Grow the Capacities AI Can’t Develop for Us

AI is accelerating so fast that even the tests designed to measure it are struggling to keep up. On the human side, not so much. Our nervous systems still evolve over millennia, not months.

Technology has always advanced faster than humanity’s ability to keep pace with what it makes possible. In an AI world, that gap is one of the most fundamental—and potentially existential—challenges facing leaders today.

Two Clocks, One Widening Gap

Recent research on “evolutionary mismatch” points to the same basic tension: we can transform our environment far faster than our biology can catch up.

That gap keeps widening. Industrialization reshaped life over centuries. The internet did it in decades. Generative AI is doing it in years—and sometimes months.

On one hand, we can learn quickly, build new habits, redesign organizations, and create new norms that help close the gap. We can also create rules and standards to slow down new technologies. But by the time rules are written, debated, approved, and enforced, the technology is light years ahead.

On the other hand, the most human of our capacities do not update on command. Judgment, self-awareness, courage, steadiness, and the wisdom to use powerful technology well still has to be developed the old-fashioned way: through practice, reflection, experience, and relationship. That takes time.

Amare Instant Thought Experiment

The next time a major AI announcement lands, notice your immediate reaction.

Excitement? Fear? Urgency? The sudden conviction that your company needs three new tools by lunch?

Take one breath. The ability to stay present while the environment accelerates is itself a form of adaptation.

Is Your Leadership Growing as Fast as Your Technology?

AI is advancing rapidly, but the human capacities needed to lead it—judgment, courage, self-awareness, and connection—take time to develop. If you’re navigating the challenges of leading in an AI-driven world, book a Catalyst Call with Moshe to explore how you can grow your leadership alongside the technology.

Mirror: Three Questions to Reflect On

1. Where is the pace of technology making you less thoughtful or connected?

2. What part of your leadership cannot be upgraded by software?

3. Are you developing yourself as deliberately as you are adopting AI?

Window Into Toyota’s Decade-Old Practice

Toyota has spent decades practicing an idea it calls jidoka—“automation with a human touch.” The principle is simple: machines should do what machines do well, while human judgment remains central. Toyota’s current AI initiative explicitly ties greater AI investment to human-resource development. It’s a real-world “both-and” approach.

The Leadership Lesson Hiding in Plain Sight

Powerful AI will increasingly be available to you and every one of your competitors. Access to intelligence will become far less of a differentiator.

Harder to copy will be an organization full of people who can think clearly under pressure, question a confident machine, disagree productively, build trust, recognize unintended consequences, and remember what actually matters and why they are here.

The ultimate AI winners may be the organizations that develop human maturity as aggressively as machine capability.

The Great Integrity: A Very Old Idea Becomes Surprisingly Useful

In his interpretation of the ancient Tao Te Ching, Ralph Alan Dale used the phrase “Great Integrity” to describe a life of harmony and interdependence. Importantly, he did not reject technology. Dale imagined technological knowledge transformed into systems of economy and communication that genuinely serve human needs.

That is a much bigger idea than “humans versus machines.”

Great Integrity envisions increasingly powerful technology and increasingly mature humans growing together—each doing what it does best, without one diminishing the other.

Door Into Action: 3 Amare Principles to Grow Your People with Your AI

1. Develop at human speed. Protect reflection, relationships, practice, and experience—the places maturity actually develops.

2. Choose wisdom over speed. Use AI to move faster, but slow down where judgment, values, and consequences matter most.

3. Upgrade the humans too. Invest in the capacities that technology can’t supply for you: judgment, trust, intuition, self-awareness, courage, and connection.

Amare Team Talk

Ask your team: “What human skills do we need to develop now so AI makes us wiser, not just faster?”

Resist asking AI to give you the answer!

Evolve Your Leadership

AI will likely keep advancing faster than human biology, organizations, and regulations. We do not need to become machine-speed humans.

AI will keep advancing at astonishing speed. Rather than leaving humans behind, it is calling leaders forward—to develop more wisdom, judgment, courage, connection, and love—precisely because the technology they are responsible for guiding has become so powerful.

That is Great Integrity for the AI age.

The opportunity for leaders is not to keep pace with machines. It is to help humanity grow wisely alongside them.
